CoCo Vandeweghe Randomly Calls Carmelo Anthony ‘Soft’ After Wimbledon Win

When it comes to hot Carmelo Anthony takes, there is no offseason.

CoCo Vandeweghe had just upset Karolina Pliskova, the No. 11 player in the world, in a second-round match at Wimbledon on Wednesday. But when the 23-year-old tennis player spoke to reporters after her win, the discussion took a surprising turn.

“I just feel that Carmelo, he is a bit soft,” Vandeweghe said, via the New York Daily News. “And now this is just my own personal opinion. I think he is soft. I don’t think he has a killer instinct in his eyes, at least this last year.”

All right, then.

If you’re wondering why a tennis player is sounding off about Anthony, Vandeweghe is the niece of Kiki Vandeweghe, who played for the New York Knicks and dealt with Carmelo while serving as general manager of the Denver Nuggets.

CoCo’s grandfather, Ernie, also played for the Knicks, so she’s plenty qualified to drop some basketball knowledge. And she wasn’t done.

“And I also think (Anthony) needs people around him that have that killer instinct, because then that brings it out of you,” Vandeweghe added. “And with him taking such a high salary, I think that kind of handcuffs the Knicks in being able to get those types of players that are getting big contracts. There’s no way around that.”

Are you getting all this, Phil Jackson?

Vandeweghe took to Twitter later Wednesday after her comments gained some steam.

Anthony has yet to respond to Vandeweghe’s comments, but judging by a recent tweet, it appears he has no time for the haters.
