BOSTON — Houston Astros center fielder Jake Marisnick put a literal dent in the Fenway Park scoreboard to prevent the Red Sox from putting an even bigger figurative dent in it.

Marisnick slammed into the left field wall in the sixth inning Sunday while making an outstanding catch. The grab didn’t prevent Boston from defeating Houston 5-4, but it robbed Brock Holt of an extra-base hit and kept two runs from scoring with the Sox already leading 3-1.

The Red Sox scored two runs in the sixth before Marisnick’s hard-nosed play. Shortstop Carlos Correa committed an error that allowed Hanley Ramirez to reach base and left fielder Evan Gattis committed an error that enabled Ramirez to score on Pablo Sandoval’s third hit of the game.

Marisnick’s play looked huge minutes later when the Astros scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 4-3 lead, only to then relinquish said lead when Ramirez launched a go-ahead, two-run homer in the bottom of the frame.

Regardless of its importance — or lack thereof — Marisnick’s catch was sweet. He ran full-speed into the Fenway Park scoreboard, which doesn’t have any give. It’s rather amazing he wasn’t shaken up.
