Exactly 11 years ago Friday, catcher Jason Varitek (literally) took matters into his own hands and punched Alex Rodriguez in the face during a game against the New York Yankees, sparking a huge brawl at Fenway Park. One could say July 24, 2004, was right at the heart of the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry.
The rest is history, of course. The Red Sox eventually snapped an 86-year World Series drought. They overcame a 3-0 deficit to defeat the Yankees in the ALCS and then swept the St. Louis Cardinals in the Fall Classic. It was a memorable time in Boston’s storied history.
And the July brawl, in many ways, started it all.
