Mexico’s national soccer team will go for gold this month without Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez.

Mexico announced Thursday that Hernandez won’t play in the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup after he suffered a broken collarbone in its goal-less draw against Honduras the previous night, according to ESPN. Hernandez underwent surgery on the broken bone, and his recovery timetable rules him out of the Gold Cup, which starts July 7 and ends July 26.

Hernandez broke his collarbone in the 41st minute by falling awkwardly from contact with Honduras’ Brayan Beckeles.

Hernandez’s injury compounds the woes of Mexico, which still is reeling from news defender Hector Moreno will miss the tournament due to a foot injury. Hernandez and Moreno, both 27, would have featured heavily for Mexico if healthy.

Mexico is attempting to take back the Gold Cup from the United States, which lifted the trophy in 2013. The winner of this summer’s Gold Cup will face the United States in a playoff to determine which CONCACAF nation will represent the region at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia.

Hernandez occupies second place on Mexico’s all-time leading goal scorers’ list, and his absence will rob “El Tri” of its main goal threat. Oribe Peralta is expected to lead Mexico’s line of attackers in Hernandez’s absence. Fellow forwards Carlos Vela, Giovanni Dos Santos also must raise their games. Javier Orozco now has a chance to make his first goals for Mexico important ones.

Hernandez will recover during a summer in which he is widely expected to leave Manchester United for a new club. The latest rumors say Major League Soccer’s Orlando City leads the chase for Hernandez.
