farrell editThe Boston Red Sox weren’t exactly teacher’s pets in the first half.

The Major League Baseball All-Star break marks a perfect time to dish out grades. The Red Sox, who entered the break five games under .500 (42-47) and 6 1/2 games back in the American League East, probably won’t want to place this year’s midseason report card on any refrigerators at Fenway Park.

There were some bright spots in the first half, especially with the Red Sox going 15-9 since June 16, so perhaps Boston’s year-end report card will reflect the club’s improvements. But the Red Sox’s first 89 games of 2015 featured more lows than highs. And that’s not lost on anyone in Boston’s clubhouse.

The Red Sox kick off their second half Friday against the Los Angeles Angels. Let’s grade their first half before starting the new semester. Some players passed with flying colors, while others need to study harder.

Behold, NESN.com’s 2015 midseason report card. (Drum roll.)
