Wilmer Flores Cries On Field After Being Traded; Trade Then Falls Apart

Wednesday night was a bizarre one in Flushing Meadows.

The New York Mets were involved in one of the season’s weirdest stories, as is wont to happen this time of the year with trade rumors flying.

Reports started surfacing midway through the Mets’ game against the San Diego Padres that New York had acquired Carlos Gomez from the Milwaukee Brewers. This obviously was good news for Mets fans, who are clamoring for their team to add offense.

One of the pieces expected to be going to Milwaukee was Mets infielder Wilmer Flores. Here’s where things got really weird. The trade wasn’t yet official, so Flores remained in the game, even as reports circulated it was all but a done deal.

Things got even weirder when Flores started crying — on the field — apparently upon learning he’d been dealt.

Here’s the thing, though. The trade ended up falling apart. Many assumed the Brewers got cold feet as Zack Wheeler — who’s recovering from Tommy John surgery — was thought to be going to Milwaukee. However, reports indicated the Mets actually killed the deal, citing concerns over the health of Gomez’s hip.

So, after all of that, Flores isn’t going anywhere after all — at least not yet. Despite an obviously emotional experience for Flores, Mets manager Terry Collins seemed to have little sympathy for his shortstop.

Never change, Mets. Never change.
