FOXBORO, Mass. — Now we have some context for why the New England Patriots were so quick to reportedly sign wide receiver Reggie Wayne on Monday.

The Patriots placed wideout Brandon Gibson on injured reserve after he suffered a knee injury Saturday night against the New Orleans Saints. Gibson was fighting for a final spot on the Patriots’ roster. He had a strong training camp, followed by an even more impressive preseason, in which he caught 12 passes for 97 yards.

Gibson took a shot to his knee late in the fourth quarter against the Saints. He was taken to the locker room for X-rays. He tore his ACL, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported Monday.

Gibson was entering his sixth NFL season. He previously had stints with the St. Louis Rams and Miami Dolphins. He has 233 career receptions for 2,711 yards with 13 touchdowns.

The Patriots also re-signed rookie linebacker D.J. Lynch on Monday, the team announced. He originally signed with the Patriots on June 11 and was released Aug. 1.

The Patriots still have one spot open on their 90-man roster after reportedly signing Wayne and releasing fullback Eric Kettani.
