FOXBORO, Mass. — Saturday was the ninth day of New England Patriots training camp, but Tom Brady already looks in midseason form.
The Patriots starting quarterback was a perfect 7-for-7 in team drills, as backup Jimmy Garoppolo took the majority of reps behind center.
Brady was 2-for-2 with completions to running back Jonas Gray and tight end Jake Bequette in 7-on-7s and 5-for-5 — hooking up with tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Michael Hoomanawanui, running back Brandon Bolden and wide receivers Danny Amendola and Josh Boyce — in 11-on-11s.
Brady also scrambled for a 60-yard touchdown during 11-on-11s, which made the Patriots fans in attendance go wild.
— Garoppolo was 3-for-6 in 7-on-7s and 10-for-17 with an interception — his fourth of training camp — in 11-on-11s.
— Boyce and running back James White led the way with three receptions apiece.
— Cornerback Logan Ryan picked off Garoppolo. The ball deflected off wide receiver Jonathan Krause’s hands and into Ryan’s waiting arms.
— Rookie cornerback Darryl Roberts continues to impress. He had a pass deflection in 11-on-11s as Garoppolo targeted Boyce. Linebacker Jamie Collins, cornerback Bradley Fletcher and safety Jordan Richards also had pass breakups.
— Running back Travaris Cadet became the fourth Patriots running back to suffer a training camp injury, joining LeGarrette Blount, Dion Lewis and Tyler Gaffney. The team joined for a big huddle after Cadet went down. Cadet looked frustrated, throwing his mouthguard and kicking the dirt, as he slowly limped off the field.
— The Patriots practiced onside kicks Saturday, which shows they’re ramping up for their first preseason game next week.
— One of Garoppolo’s completions was to himself. Patriots defensive end Rufus Johnson deflected the pass back into Garoppolo’s arms, so it wasn’t quite as impressive as this:
