Jerry Dipoto is returning to the organization with which he began his post-playing career.

The Boston Red Sox on Wednesday hired Dipoto, a former Red Sox scout, to assist with offseason player evaluation. Peter Gammons of MLB Network was the first to report news of the hiring, which the team later confirmed.

Dipoto, 47, most recently served as the Los Angeles Angels’ general manager from 2011 until last month. He resigned from that position July 1, reportedly after a rift between himself and Angels manager Mike Scioscia.

Dipoto’s employment with the Red Sox will not prevent him from pursuing GM opportunities with other teams, a source told FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal.

Dipoto spent eight seasons as a major league reliever, appearing in 390 games for the Cleveland Indians, New York Mets and Colorado Rockies, before moving into the front office.
