The Boston Red Sox have recalled infielder Deven Marrero on Saturday to replace first baseman Mike Napoli’s spot on the 25-man roster.
Napoli was traded to the Texas Rangers on Friday for cash considerations or a player to be named later. The spot has not been filled on the 40-man roster.
Marrero spent about a month with the Red Sox earlier this season from June 25-July 20 during starting second baseman Dustin Pedroia’s first stint on the disabled list. The 24-year-old made his major league debut on June 28 against the Tampa Bay Rays. He appeared in five games, starting three, going 1-for-7 with a run scored.
Marrero has hit .237 (65-for-274) with 11 doubles, one triple, five home runs and 22 RBIs in 78 games for Triple-A Pawtucket.
Speculation has surrounded first baseman/outfielder Allen Craig since Napoli’s trade, but it appears the 31-year-old will remain in the minors for the time being with Travis Shaw hitting well.
