UPDATE (5:45 p.m. ET): The Patriots confirmed Jimmay Mundine’s release Monday night, along with four others.

ORIGINAL STORY: The New England Patriots have begun trimming their roster in preparation for Tuesday’s 75-man roster deadline.

The Patriots informed tight end Jimmay Mundine of his release Monday, according to a source. Mundine’s release brings the Patriots’ roster to 83 players. Expect at least two more players to be cut Monday.

Mundine, an undrafted free agent out of Kansas, caught three passes for 26 yards this preseason. He was in uniform but didn’t play Friday night against the Carolina Panthers.

Mundine still could land on the practice squad, despite being released early. The Patriots released linebacker Deontae Skinner at the 75-man cut last season, then he wound up on the practice squad and the 53-man roster last season.
