Torey Lovullo: Red Sox Trying To Add Bench Coach As Soon As Possible

BOSTON — John Farrell’s absence inherently has a trickle-down effect on the Red Sox’s coaching staff.

Torey Lovullo, previously Boston’s bench coach, will manage the Red Sox for the remainder of the 2015 season while Farrell goes through chemotherapy treatment and recovers from his Stage 1 lymphoma. Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington on Friday didn’t rule out adding to Boston’s coaching staff to ensure there’s enough man power with Farrell sidelined and Lovullo echoed those sentiments Saturday.

The Red Sox could add a bench coach in the coming days.

“That’s something we’re talking about right now. We’ve been working through that with Ben and John,” Lovullo said before Saturday’s game against the Seattle Mariners at Fenway Park. “We’re just throwing some names around and we certainly want to have somebody on the bench, so that is imminent. Who that is at this point? We’re not sure. We’re going to try to do that as soon as possible.”

Farrell, who was diagnosed with lymphoma Monday while undergoing hernia surgery in Detroit, said Friday he intends to return to his position as Boston’s manager in 2016.
