Fans at Miller Park witnessed a frightening moment Thursday night.

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Jimmy Nelson was on the mound in the third inning when St. Louis Cardinals batter Tommy Pham hit a hard line drive up the middle that struck Nelson directly in the back of the head.

The Brewers medical staff immediately rushed to Nelson’s side, and things initially didn’t look good for the 26-year-old right-hander.

Fortunately, though, Nelson was able to walk off the field under his own power and appeared to be lucid. He immediately was taken to the hospital, where CT scan revealed he miraculously only suffered a bruise. Nelson remained in the hospital overnight for observation and sent out a positive message on Twitter late Thursday night.

“I think he escaped without any serious harm,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said after the game — a 6-3 Brewers loss — via The Associated Press. “We’re very, very fortunate. It’s scary. It’s not something you ever want to see.”
