BOSTON — Dustin Pedroia’s wait finally is over.
The Boston Red Sox activated the second baseman from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday. He’ll play second base and bat second in Tuesday night’s contest against the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park.
Pedroia was placed on the DL for the second time this season on July 25 after he re-aggravated a hamstring injury during a July 22 contest against the Houston Astros. He played just six games in the month of July. Red Sox interim manager Torey Lovullo hinted Pedroia could return Tuesday if given the go-ahead by team doctors, and it appears he’s gotten the green light.
The Red Sox also announced they recalled right-handed pitchers Matt Barnes and Jonathan Aro from Triple-A Pawtucket and selected left-hander Rich Hill to the big-league roster from Pawtucket. Hill, who had a three-year stint in Boston from 2010 to 2012, began this season in the Washington Nationals’ organization but signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox in August.
Rookie left-hander Henry Owens will start on the mound in his seventh major league appearance and will be caught by fellow rookie Blake Swihart. Owens is hoping to bounce back after allowing seven runs in just 1 2/3 innings against the New York Yankees in his last outing.
