Patriots-Jets Live: New England Holds Off New York 30-23 To Stay Undefeated

Final, Patriots 30-23: The Jets recovered the onside kick, but they couldn’t do anything with it.

Ryan Fitzpatrick completed a pass over the middle, and New York couldn’t get back to the line of scrimmage in time. A false start penalty was called on the Jets, resulting in a 10-second runoff that ended the game.

The Patriots improve to 6-0.

Fourth quarter, 0:18, Patriots 30-23: The Jets went for a field goal on first down in an effort to grab points while they could. Nick Folk knocked it through from 55 yards out.

It’ll all come down to an onside kick.

Fourth quarter, 1:13, Patriots 30-20: The Patriots might have just iced this thing.

Tom Brady found a wide-open Rob Gronkowski, who then rumbled into the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown. Gronk has a career-high 11 receptions for 108 yards and a TD.

Brady has thrown for 355 yards and two scores. He also has a rushing touchdown.

Fourth quarter, 2:00, Patriots 23-20: The Pats are marching toward the end zone at the two-minute warning.

Brandon LaFell dropped another pass, but Danny Amendola is making plays down the stretch.

Fourth quarter, 5:32, Patriots 23-20: The Jets couldn’t do anything on their first drive following the Patriots’ go-ahead touchdown.

Ryan Fitzpatrick completed a 13-yard pass to kick off the drive, but it immediately stalled from there. The Patriots will take over at their own 32-yard line after an 11-yard punt return by Danny Amendola.

Fourth quarter, 7:16, Patriots 23-20: The Patriots have regained the lead.

The Jets forced the Patriots into a third-and-17 from their own 27-yard line, but Tom Brady completed a 27-yard pass to Julian Edelman in the middle of the field to extend the drive.

Brady proceeded to hook up with Rob Gronkowski for three huge completions. He then found Danny Amendola over the middle for an 8-yard touchdown pass.

Amendola’s TD was reviewed to make sure he broke the plane. The ruling on the field was upheld, and the Patriots lead by a field goal with a little over seven minutes to play.

Fourth quarter, 12:50, Jets 20-16: An 18-yard pass interference penalty on Malcolm Butler gave the Jets the ball at New England’s 15-yard line, but New York couldn’t punch it in.

Brandon Marshall dropped a well-thrown pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick in the end zone to kill the drive. Nick Folk split the uprights from 30 yards out to extend the Jets’ lead.

End of the third quarter, Jets 17-16: The Jets have the ball on the Patriots’ 43-yard line as the fourth quarter begins. The Patriots have given up two first downs — one on a 7-yard run by Chris Ivory and another on a 29-yard reception by Brandon Marshall over Logan Ryan.

Third quarter, 2:02, Jets 17-16: And the Patriots couldn’t respond.

Brady had LaFell open, but he suffered his fifth drop of the game. Not a good showing for LaFell as he comes off the PUP list.

Third quarter, 4:07, Jets 17-16: The Jets now lead deep into the third quarter.

The Patriots definitely are doing their job defending the run, holding Jets running backs to 2.2 yards per carry, but they’ve been a sieve against Fitzpatrick, allowing 190 yards and two touchdowns.

Malcolm Butler is getting burned by Eric Decker, allowing 82 yards on five catches.

Third quarter, 11:10, Patriots 16-10: Drops are killing the Patriots. Killing them.

Receiver Julian Edelman just suffered his first drop of the game, and it came in the end zone on third down, forcing the Patriots to kick a field goal.

The Patriots have seven drops on the game. Brady is 18 of 34 so far for 186 yards.

Half, Patriots 13-10: The Patriots tried to get a quick three points to end the half, but Tom Brady was sacked as time ran out. Brandon LaFell dropped his third pass of the game, as well.

Second quarter, 0:21, Patriots 13-10: The Patriots forced another three-and-out before the half. Dont’a Hightower forced a Jamie Collins sack by blowing up the pocket for Fitzpatrick.

Second quarter, 2:00, Patriots 13-10: Stephen Gostkowski knocked through a 46-yard field goal to give the Patriots the lead at the two-minute warning. The Patriots moved 31 yards down the field on seven plays. The drive ended with a sack after Jets outside linebacker Calvin Pace came in unblocked.

Brandon LaFell caught a 19-yard pass — his first of the season after coming off PUP. Brady is 1 of 4 targeting the big wideout.

Second quarter, 4:49, 10-10: The Patriots’ defense is doing their job now and forced another three-and-out. Malcolm Butler stopped Eric Decker short of a first down on third-and-8.

Second quarter, 6:24, 10-10: And with that, the Patriots are back on track after a slow start.

Brady capped off the drive with a 1-yard TD on a QB sneak. He put the Patriots close on an 11-yard scramble on third down.

Danny Amendola caught two passes for 31 yards on the drive.

Second quarter, 9:50, Jets 10-3: The Patriots just forced a three-and-out, and the Jets only managed a 31-yard punt. The Patriots have the ball on the Jets’ 47-yard line.

Second quarter, 11:34, Jets 10-3: The Patriots went three-and-out. It’s time for the defense to step up and force a turnover.

Second quarter, 12:30, Jets 10-3: The Patriots officially trail the Jets early in the second quarter.

The Jets went 83 yards down the field and finished the drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick to Jeremy Kerley. Patriots cornerback Justin Coleman gave up the score.

End of the first quarter, 3-3: The Jets are having no problem moving the ball on the Patriots’ offense. They have the ball on the Patriots’ 11-yard line.

Fitzpatrick isn’t afraid to target Butler on Decker. The Patriots’ best defensive player so far has been Hightower, who’s helping limit Chris Ivory to 5 yards on four carries. The Patriots’ plan to limit the Jets’ rushing attack is working. They’re not doing well enough against the pass, however.

First quarter, 5:05, 3-3: The Patriots had some momentum before James White dropped an easy Brady pass on second-and-1. The Patriots were forced to punt, and the Jets have the ball on their own 17-yard line.

First quarter, 7:32, 3-3: Patriots safety Patrick Chung saved a touchdown with an impressive third-down pass breakup in the end zone, forcing the Jets to kick a field goal.

The Patriots are having cornerback Logan Ryan follow Jets wideout Brandon Marshall with help from Devin McCourty early, and Malcolm Butler is shadowing Jets receiver Eric Decker.

Butler gave up two catches for 35 yards on four targets. Ryan gave up a 13-yard reception. Rookie cornerback Justin Coleman was flagged for illegal hands to the face.

First quarter, 12:48, Patriots 3-0: The Patriots got back the ball quickly. After Chris Ivory lost yards on his first carry, Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick was strip-sacked by Chandler Jones, and Dont’a Hightower recovered the fumble.

The Patriots then lost a yard on their first offensive series with an incompletion, a 5-yard reception by tight end Rob Gronkowski and a 6-yard sack, let up by Cameron Fleming. Stephen Gostkowski kicked a field goal to give the Patriots an early lead.

First quarter, 15:00: The Patriots already have won something this afternoon. The Jets called heads, it came up tails, and the Patriots will kick off after deferring to the second half.

12:25 p.m.: James White and Patrick Chung were back catching kicks in warmups with Lewis out. Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola, as usual, were catching punts.

We’ll find out the Patriots’ starting offensive line momentarily.

11:31 a.m.: Running back Dion Lewis officially is inactive for the Patriots. Here are their seven inactives:

That means the Patriots have just two active running backs and six offensive linemen. The Patriots also can move tight end Michael Williams to offensive tackle if necessary.

Linebacker Dont’a Hightower will return with a rib injury after missing last week’s game. Special teams ace Matthew Slater also will play despite injuring his knee last week. Rookie defensive end Trey Flowers will make his NFL debut.

10:35 a.m.: We’re just over two and-a-half hours from kickoff, and Julian Edelman still is doing his pregame warmups.

9:15 a.m. ET: The New England Patriots could be without their starting running back in Sunday afternoon’s matchup with the New York Jets.

Dion Lewis “does not expect to play” in Week 7, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday. Lewis was limited in practice all week with an abdominal injury. He officially was listed as questionable to play, though he did start last week’s game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Lewis was limited in the game and had just four carries for 21 yards with three catches for 18 yards.

If Lewis doesn’t play, James White is likely to see an uptick in third-down reps. Running backs LeGarrette Blount and Brandon Bolden also could see more time in the Patriots’ offense.

Starting left tackle Marcus Cannon (toe), defensive end Jabaal Sheard (ankle) and outside linebacker Rufus Johnson (illness) already have been ruled out for the game. Starting left guard Shaq Mason didn’t practice Wednesday or Thursday because of a knee injury, and he was limited in practice Friday, so his status is in doubt.

Starting wide receiver Brandon LaFell will be back in the offense, however. He was activated off PUP on Saturday by the Patriots. LaFell could ease his way back into the offense after missing six weeks with a foot injury.
