KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Raul Mondesi Jr. was added to the Kansas City Royals’ World Series roster ahead of Game 1 against the New York Mets on Tuesday night.
Mondesi, the son of former major leaguer Raul Mondesi, took the place of speedster Terrance Gore on Kansas City’s 25-man roster. The 20-year-old replaced reliever Joba Chamberlain on the 40-man roster.
If Mondesi appears in a game, the switch-hitting infielder will become the first player in major league history to make his debut in the World Series, according to STATS. Mondesi’s father never appeared in a World Series game despite totaling 6,369 plate appearances in 1,525 career regular-season games over 13 seasons.
The younger Mondesi is considered one of the Royals’ top prospects. He spent all season at Double-A Northwest Arkansas, where he hit.243 with six home runs, 33 RBIs and 19 stolen bases.
