This weekend was supposed to be a joyous one for Doug Flutie. Instead, it figures to be one filled with sadness and sorrow.

The former Boston College quarterback on Wednesday announced via his Facebook page that both his mother, Joan, and his father, Dick, passed away.

The story is incredibly sad, as Flutie’s parents died of heart attacks less than an hour apart.

The news comes just a few days before BC is set to take the national stage. The Eagles will take on Notre Dame as part of the Shamrock Series at Fenway Park. Flutie, the face of the Boston College program, is also a local kid, which means this figured to be a big weekend for the former Heisman Trophy winner.
