Liverpool Takes Game-By-Game Route Toward Good Times After Man City Win

Liverpool has finished celebrating its biggest win of the season and now looks to improve on a performance for the ages.

Martin Skrtel, Simon Mingolet and Nathaniel Clyne spoke to LiverpoolFC.com following Saturday’s 4-1 Premier League win over Manchester City. Each said the thrilling victory at The Etihad Stadium will be a source of confidence among the squad, and they hope the Reds can use the renewed momentum to their advantage in the coming weeks.

“The win that we got today is very good for our confidence going into the next games,” Skrtel told LiverpoolFC.com on Sunday. “We’re just going from game to game and trying to get as many points as we can.

Like Skrtel, Mignolet said the Reds should try to approach each game with the same focus and energy they showed against Manchester City — starting with Thursday’s UEFA Europa League game against Bordeaux.

“We have to take it game by game,” Mignolet told LiverpoolFC.com on Sunday. “Next Thursday is a massive one again because we want to get through in the Europa League.

“So we’ll focus on that. We can celebrate this victory, and then from Sunday onwards we’ll work to make sure we’re ready for Bordeaux, which is going to be a massive one at home again.

“Let’s take this momentum and confidence into the next game and it can only be better for the future.”

Clyne also looked to the future, saying Liverpool will grow even stronger, as the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Christian Benteke, Jordan Henderson and others return to peak fitness and sharpness over the next few weeks.

“We’ve got a lot of players coming back from injury, the likes of (Sturridge) and a few more players coming back.

“You can see that the bench is ever so strong and we can make a lot of changes and still have a good team out there.”

Perhaps Liverpool players are following the lead of manager Jurgen Klopp, who said Monday the win over Manchester City won’t change Liverpool’s approach to this season.

“We can’t change our targets every two weeks just because we have won,” Klopp told LiverpoolFC.com. “We have to work, that’s all. If somebody thinks after a game like this we can go to the top of the table, it’s really not my problem. I don’t think that way.”

Liverpool has weathered the grueling stretch of early season road games and now is entering a stretch of the campaign in which it expects to amass lots of points in a short time, given the strength of the opposition.

One of the worst things Klopp’s Reds could do would be to overlook an opponent amid the euphoria of a previous result and drop points they shouldn’t. Maybe that’s why Klopp explained the win over Manchester City wasn’t a destination in itself but a sign of his team’s ongoing development — and he stopped the party after 24 hours.
