The Boston Red Sox sent first baseman Travis Shaw to play in the Puerto Rican winter league in hopes of getting the 25-year-old more reps at third base.

That hope was squashed after only one game, according to Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, who told reporters Monday at the annual MLB General Managers Meetings in Boca Raton, Fla., that Shaw complained of discomfort in his right shoulder after an 0-for-4 performance.

Shaw was diagnosed with an impingement, Dombrowski explained, which is pain caused by a shoulder tendon rubbing against the shoulder blade. Dombrowski added that Shaw was sent home for treatment, but the ailment isn’t any reason for concern.

“In a couple weeks, it should be fine,” Dombrowski said, via the Boston Herald. “But basically it’s going to preclude him from playing winter ball because by the time that 2 1/2-week (treatment) period is over and you start building it back, now you’re talking about a month. But they’re not at all concerned about this being anything of major consequence.”

Shaw hit .270 with 13 home runs and 36 RBIs in 226 at-bats for Boston during his rookie season.
