Doc Rivers is a little bit of a Grinch when it comes to Christmas shoes.

Seven years ago when the Boston Celtics visited the Los Angeles Lakers on Christmas Day in an NBA Finals rematch, Rivers’ team fell behind at halftime and he let out his frustrations on his players’ Christmas shoes.

“Yeah, I remember Doc talked about how we had all these colorful shoes on,” Paul Pierce recalled during a Los Angeles Clippers practice Thursday. “We couldn’t focus on the game.”

“I went off at halftime,” Rivers remembered. “I didn’t like it. I mean I’m watching us play and looking at green shoes, red shoes and I’m getting grumpier by the minute on Christmas Day. So I unloaded at halftime. It made me feel good.”

Rivers’ rant didn’t work as his Celtics lost to the Lakers and had their 19-game winning streak snapped.

Here’s hoping for Doc that his Clippers mitigate the flashiness of their footwear on Christmas Day when they take on the Lakers.
