John Farrell: David Price Will Impact Red Sox ‘Bunch Of Different Ways’

BOSTON — The Red Sox prioritized adding an ace this offseason. In theory, having a top-flight starter makes life a whole lot easier.

Just ask Red Sox manager John Farrell, who already is envisioning several ways in which David Price will impact his new organization after signing a seven-year contract with Boston on Friday.

“When you talk about that No. 1 starter label, all eyes go to him,” Farrell said after Price’s introductory press conference at Fenway Park. “He leads by performance and example. It can have a trickle-down effect to every guy in our rotation.”

Price figures to take the ball Opening Day. If all goes according to plan, he’ll also be the first man up come October. The Red Sox obviously need contributions from their other starters, though, and Price’s presence as a staff leader could bring out the best in his teammates.

“I think every pitcher will be able to benefit from him, and I think every teammate will,” Farrell said. “I think what guys are going to come to know very quickly is how engaging David is, how giving he is of his experiences and his knowledge. That came across in the meeting (with Price) in Nashville, which I didn’t really have a feel for. He is going to be welcomed with open arms in that clubhouse, certainly.”

Price’s presence could be especially important for young left-handers Eduardo Rodriguez, Henry Owens and Brian Johnson, all of whom debuted with Boston in 2015. They’ll have an opportunity to learn from a Cy Young winner in his prime and be able to use that information in their own development.

“His pedigree goes a long way for not only the players on our team, but the fans,” Farrell said. “He’s proven that over time. You have the luxury to manage a bullpen differently because of him.”

Price said Friday he wants to become a leader in Boston. He’ll have that opportunity, as the Red Sox have high expectations for the five-time All-Star on and off the field.
