Report: Mark Ingram Put On Season-Ending IR By Saints With Shoulder Injury

UPDATE (8:25 P.M. ET): Mark Ingram’s season is over.

The New Orleans Saints placed the running back on injured reserve Wednesday, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, with what reportedly is a “serious” shoulder injury.

ORIGINAL STORY: Mark Ingram reportedly is hurt, but his injury doesn’t have any playoff implications. Actually, we should clarify and say it doesn’t have any NFL playoff implications.

The New Orleans Saints running back is dealing with a shoulder injury. NFL Media’s Rand Getlin reports the injury is “serious” and some fear Ingram’s season could be over.

Ingram is having one of the best seasons of his career. The 26-year-old has rushed for 769 yards in 12 games and looked poised to gain 1,000 rushing yards for the first time.

While the Saints don’t have a whole lot to play for, Ingram’s injury could be a big one for fantasy owners. Ingram’s ability to move the ball and score touchdowns on the ground made him a strong fantasy play, as did his role in New Orleans’ passing attack. Ingram has been targeted at least four times in eight games this season and his 50 receptions is by far a new career high, almost doubling his previous best mark of 29 receptions last season.

There’s not a whole lot of depth behind Ingram on the Saints’ roster, either. Khiry Robinson also is done for the season, which means the workload likely would fall on C.J. Spiller and rookie Marcus Murphy, who has yet to receive a carry but has fumbled three times this season as a returner.
