Mario Williams’ final game with the Buffalo Bills could come Sunday against the New York Jets.

A person with direct knowledge of discussions told The Associated Press the Bills plan to cut Williams this offseason. The four-time Pro Bowl defensive end has two years remaining on the six-year, $100 million contract he signed with Buffalo before the 2012 season.

Williams, who turns 31 in January, is set to make an $11.5 million base salary next season. Cutting him reportedly would save the Bills more than $12 million under the salary cap. The financial flexibility could be important, if not necessary, for a team entering Week 17 with a 7-8 record.

Williams, who was selected first overall by the Houston Texans in 2006, recorded a career-high 14.5 sacks last season. He has just four sacks in 14 games this season, though, as the Bills’ defense has underperformed in Rex Ryan’s first season as Buffalo’s head coach.
