Sidney Crosby Wants To See Another 100-Point Scorer; Patrick Kane, Perhaps?

BOSTON — NHL players scoring 100 points in a single season use to be common, but not anymore.

Dallas Stars winger Jamie Benn won the Art Ross Trophy with 87 points last season, the lowest in a non-lockout campaign since 1962-63.

We saw five consecutive seasons with multiple 100-point scorers coming out of the 2004-05 lockout, but since the 2009-10 campaign, only three players — Vancouver Canucks winger Daniel Sedin and Pittsburgh Penguins centers Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby — have reached the 100-point plateau.

Crosby was the last to do it in 2013-14, and he’d like to see someone hit that mark this season.

“It would be nice for somebody to be there,” Crosby said Wednesday as his Penguins prepared to play the Boston Bruins at TD Garden. “It’s not easy to get points, but it looks like some of those guys are definitely in the running to get there. It would be nice to see 100 there.”

One of the guys in the running is Chicago Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane. The three-time Stanley Cup champion saw his 26-game point streak end Tuesday night against the Colorado Avalanche. It was a record for an American player and the longest in Blackhawks history.

Crosby was impressed.

“It’s not easy to keep putting those games together,” Crosby said. “You could see there toward the end of it he’s just finding ways, trying to ride that wave as long as you can. What he was able to do, with that consistency, is not easy. Really impressed with him being able to do that. Like I said, you need some bounces along the way, but it’s pretty tough to do that.”

Kane leads the league with 46 points (19 goals, 27 assists). He’s on pace for 117 points, which would shatter his career-high of 88. It also would be the highest single-season scoring total since Crosby led the league with 120 in 2006-07, his second pro season.

Crosby, meanwhile, has struggled to score this season with just 19 points (six goals, 13 assists) through 29 games. He needs to average 1.19 points in Pittsburgh’s remaining 53 games to tally 100-plus points for the sixth time in his career.
