Lane Kiffin had to call an audible shortly after Alabama defeated Clemson in Monday night’s College Football Playoff National Championship.

The Alabama offensive coordinator was talking to reporters while walking out of University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., when he noticed the team buses pulling away, according to reports. Kiffin tried to whistle to a security guard to stop the final bus, according to FOXSports.com, but his attempt was unsuccessful.

Fortunately for Kiffin, help arrived in the form of Alabama head coach Nick Saban. A vehicle was waiting for Saban, who usually misses the team bus after games, so Kiffin was able to catch a ride with his boss.

Kiffin reportedly took the whole thing in stride, even lightening the mood with a dig at himself.

“First, I get fired on the tarmac, and now I get left behind at the national championship,” Kiffin said, referring to when he was fired as USC’s head coach at a private Los Angeles airport in September 2013.
