49ers Hire Chip Kelly As Head Coach With Hopes Of Turning Around Awful Offense

It didn’t take long for Chip Kelly to find another job in the NFL.

Kelly was hired by the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday, the team announced. Kelly’s hiring comes roughly two weeks after he was fired by the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Eagles let go of Kelly after three seasons. Philly went 10-6 in Kelly’s first two seasons before struggling mightily during the 2015 campaign. The Eagles went 6-9 under Kelly this season, and he was fired before the team’s final game. Despite the relative regular-season success in Kelly’s first two seasons, the Eagles lost their one and only playoff game under the former University of Oregon head coach.

Kelly’s top task in San Francisco likely will revolve around fixing the offense. The 49ers had the NFL’s worst scoring offense in 2015, and only the St. Louis Rams averaged fewer yards per game. Under Kelly, the Eagles averaged 23.6 points per game, good for 13th in the league, after finishing fourth and third in scoring in his first and second seasons, respectively.

The Eagles’ search for a new head coach is still ongoing. Philadelphia was linked to former New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin, but that fell apart when Coughlin reportedly withdrew his name from consideration.
