Surprise, surprise: Alabama is in the National Championship Game once again.
After decisively storming through the first round of the College Football Playoff with a 38-0 drubbing of Michigan State, the Crimson Tide seek their fourth title in the past seven years.
Here’s three reasons why they can win:
DERRICK HENRY
Say what you wish about the alleged Heisman Curse. Derrick Henry won’t be able to hear you as he scores 75 yards away downfield.
Alabama’s prized running back is a one-man wrecking crew, rushing for over 2,000 yards and 25 touchdowns (including the MSU game) this season. Even if Henry’s total yards and big plays are limited, he can still do damage on the goal line — as in, three carries for three touchdowns type of damage.
He’s also the perfect clock killer, so if Clemson falls behind facing a terrific Alabama defense, look out. Speaking of that D…
DOMINANT DEFENSE
Thanks to Johnny Manziel, Bryce Petty and the rise of the tackling-deficient Big 12 Conference, 60-something to 60-something games have become all the rage among casual college football fans. Enter Alabama, with a prolific defense that is just as dangerous as coach Nick Saban’s carefully designed pro-style offense.
The Crimson Tide’s D rolled all season, allowing just 258.2 yards per game and 14.4 points per contest, respectively ranked second and third nationally in those categories. It could be a long night full of three-and-outs for Deshaun Watson and Co.
HO HUM NICK SABAN
In a court room, defendants are assumed innocent until proven otherwise. In national championship games, Alabama is assumed to be the victor until proven otherwise.
Nick Saban-led teams have been to four national title games. They’ve never left as losers.
Alabama’s mastermind is simply the best coach in college football, and despite losing three of his last seven bowl appearances overall, Saban can’t be matched when the national championship is on the line.
And despite being favored at the sportsbooks, the story doesn’t quite scream ‘Bama: Clemson is the team that’s undefeated. Clemson hasn’t won a title since 1981. Clemson has the Heisman snub. In other words, Clemson has all the pressure and Alabama’s never had less.
Saban’s players just have to show up, play their game and take care of business.
Just like they always do.
