UPDATE (12:55 p.m. ET): ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting Tom Coughlin has withdrawn his name from consideration from the Philadelphia Eagles’ vacant head coach position.
ORIGINAL STORY: It’s starting to sound more and more like Tom Coughlin not only will be coaching next season, but will be doing so in the NFC East, as well.
Multiple reports Thursday morning indicated talks between the former New York Giants coach and the Philadelphia Eagles are starting to heat up. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the Eagles have turned their attention to Coughlin, though Schefter did note there are still issues for the two sides to “work through.” NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport added shortly after that talks have “intensified,” and that “this could all go down very quickly.”
What exactly that means is unclear at this point, of course, but it certainly is a juicy story. Coughlin resigned earlier this month after 12 seasons with the Giants, and while he dodged questions about his future at his final news conference, he definitely didn’t rule out a return. At that same news conference, Coughlin appeared to blow right by Giants owner John Mara, which made some wonder how everything really went down.
The Eagles, who fired Chip Kelly before the season even ended, obviously are very familiar with Coughlin, who’s been in the NFC East for more than a decade. Coughlin won two Super Bowl titles with the Giants.
