The New England Patriots hope Ty Law will bring them more good luck Sunday, serving as honorary captain for the AFC Championship Game.
The Patriots are 3-0 in games that Law served as an honorary captain, including two AFC Championship games. The three-time Super Bowl champ and Hall of Famer served as honorary captain in the 2011 win over the Baltimore Ravens at Gillette Stadium, as well as last year’s win over the Indianapolis Colts that sent the Patriots to Super Bowl XLIX in Glendale, Ariz.
Most recently, the 2015 season began with the Patriots’ 28-21 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Law served as honorary captain in that game as well.
“(It is) a tremendous honor to play in our fifth straight AFC Championship Game and 12th conference title game,” Patriots owner Robert Kraft said in a statement after he extended the invitation to Law earlier in the week. “Ty Law has been a part of so many big playoff moments for our franchise over the years and I am so glad he can join us once again for Sunday’s AFC Championship Game in Denver.”
Law was selected 23rd overall by the Patriots in the 1995 NFL Draft, playing 10 seasons and winning three Super Bowls before moving to the New York Jets. He also played for the Kansas City Chiefs and Broncos before retiring in 2009. In his career, Law intercepted 37 quarterbacks, as well as four Hall of Famers and five league MVPs, including Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.
