Shawn Thornton entered this season with an expiring contract, which led to speculation he might retire. But he’s not ready to hang up his skates just yet.

The Florida Panthers announced Thursday they’ve agreed to terms on a one-year extension with Thornton. It carries a $600,000 salary-cap hit, per General Fanager.

“Shawn is a highly respected and hardworking member of our hockey club, both on and off the ice,” Panthers general manager Dale Tallon said in a statement released by the team. “His experience and leadership have made a positive impact on our locker room and on our young players as they continue their development.”

Thornton, 38, has tallied three points in 50 games for the Panthers this season. He left the Boston Bruins after the 2013-14 season and signed a two-year contract with the Panthers as a free agent.

Florida is in first place in the Atlantic Division this season and poised to make its first Stanley Cup playoff appearance since 2011-12.
