Yankees Prefer Players Act Like Russell Wilson, Not Cam Newton, With Media

Cam Newton’s controversial Super Bowl 50 postgame press conference was the talk of the sports world coming out of the big game. And it apparently found its way into the New York Yankees’ locker room, too.

The Yankees recently held a media training session, during which they showed their players the way the Carolina Panthers quarterback handled his Super Bowl press conference and the decidedly different approach Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson took following Super Bowl XLIX.

Spoiler alert: The Yankees wants their players to handle media situations more like Wilson did.

“During the Yankees’ media training, the Super Bowl is being used to portray the right and wrong way to act,” ESPN New York’s Andrew Marchand tweeted Saturday. “Part of a video shown to pitchers and catchers compares how Cam Newton handled his Super Bowl loss to the way Russell Wilson dealt with his defeat the previous year.”

Newton’s media availability lasted roughly three minutes before he left the podium following his team’s loss to the Denver Broncos. There probably was a viable explanation for why he did it, but that didn’t stop him from getting ripped for his short answers and approach.

Wilson, meanwhile, took all the blame for the Seahawks’ loss to the New England Patriots in the previous Super Bowl, which was decided on Malcolm Butler’s goal-line interception.

There are different ways to deal with a loss, and Newton isn’t apologizing for his actions. But the Yankees would prefer their players to take a different approach.
