NBA Rumors: 76ers Might Still Trade Jahlil Okafor If Joel Embiid Can Play

The Philadelphia 76ers’ potential glut of big men could push Jahlil Okafor out the door.

The Sixers might consider trading Okafor this summer if Joel Embiid proves he’s healthy enough to play next season, Philly.com’s Keith Pompey reported Sunday. Okafor’s future with the 76ers was the subject of intense speculation last month ahead of the NBA trade deadline, with the Boston Celtics and other teams registering their interest in acquiring him. The 76ers ultimately retained Okafor, but the former Duke standout might not be in Philadelphia for the long term.

Embiid’s potential return could drive Okafor back into to the shop window. The 76ers selected Embiid with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, but a stress fracture and ensuing complications in his right foot have prevented him from making his debut.

If Embiid, 22, recovers fully from bone-graft surgery by next season, he would join Okafor, 20, and Nerlens Noel, 21, in Philadelphia’s front court. Pompey claims Embiid and Okafor are similar players, and the 76ers would likely seek to trade the latter to accelerate its rebuilding effort.

Okafor enjoyed a fine rookie season, averaging 17.5 points, seven rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game. Okafor will sit out Philadelphia’s final 23 games due to a torn meniscus in his knee. When he recovers, he might find his name linked with a host of teams looking to improve in the offseason.
