Report: Patriots Sign Free Agent E.J. Biggers, Boost Cornerback Depth

The New England Patriots reportedly added a much-needed veteran presence at cornerback Tuesday, signing E.J. Biggers to a one-year contract, a source told The Boston Globe’s Ben Volin.

Biggers, 28, played in all 16 games, starting three, for the Philadelphia Eagles last season. He had 44 tackles and seven passes defensed.

Biggers began his NFL career in 2009 as a seventh-round draft pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers out of Western Michigan and also has spent time with the Washington Redskins. The 6-foot, 185-pound defensive back has four interceptions and 279 tackles in seven seasons, with 34 starts in 92 career games.

Biggers started 12 games for the Bucs in 2012, playing under Patriots head coach Bill Belichick’s buddy, Greg Schiano. Biggers played under Chip Kelly, another friend of Belichick’s, in 2015 with the Eagles.

The Patriots previously lacked bodies at cornerback, with just Malcolm Butler, Logan Ryan, Justin Coleman, Darryl Roberts and Rashaan Melvin at the position before they added Biggers. However, signing Biggers shouldn’t preclude the Patriots from drafting a cornerback or signing another veteran free agent.
