Blue Jays Rally Thwarted By Game-Ending Interference Call In Loss To White Sox

The Toronto Blue Jays lost to the Chicago White Sox in rather bizarre fashion Monday night.

Trailing by two entering the bottom of the ninth inning, the Blue Jays notched a double and a walk against White Sox closer David Robertson to put the potential tying run on first base with two outs. Michael Saunders then hit a high chopper toward second baseman Brett Lawrie and booked it down the basepath, setting up what likely would have been a bang-bang play at first.

A play at first ultimately was unnecessary, however, as Saunders’ batted ball hit baserunner Troy Tulowitzki in the arm. By rule, Tulowitzki automatically was ruled out, putting the finishing touches on a 7-5 White Sox win.

It’s the second time this season the Blue Jays have lost on an unconventional final play.

An April 5 game against the Tampa Bay Rays ended after Jose Bautista was called for interfering with the second baseman as he attempted to break up a double play. The ruling wiped away the two runs that scored on the play, and Toronto lost 3-2.

The White Sox, meanwhile, have been one of Major League Baseball’s biggest surprises so far this season. After finishing fourth in the American League Central last season, they entered Tuesday with an AL-best 14-6 record.
