Why Ref Assignment For Celtics-Hawks Game 2 Could Be Good News For Boston

Scott Foster is one of the more — to put it kindly — disliked referees in the NBA. Yet the Boston Celtics actually might be pleased to learn he’ll be working their game Tuesday night.

In addition to being voted the league’s worst official in a player poll earlier this season, Foster also is known for being the bane of home teams’ existence, particularly in the playoffs.

Take this stat, from Atlanta Hawks team writer K.L. Chouinard.

After the fourth-seeded Hawks edged the No. 5 seed Celtics 102-101 in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series, Boston will need all the help it can get in Game 2, especially since it likely will be without injured guard Avery Bradley for the remainder of the series.

The C’s will be the road team again Tuesday night before traveling home to TD Garden for Games 3 and 4.

One last note on Foster: A crew made up of him, Tony Brothers (who also has been assigned to Tuesday’s C’s-Hawks game) and Zach Zarba was responsible for blowing four calls in overtime of Game 2 of the last year’s NBA Finals.

So, yeah. Tuesday night should be fun.
