Alex Rodriguez and the Boston Red Sox made David Moss’ first trip to Fenway Park less bitter and sweeter than it otherwise would have been.

Moss took home one of Rodriguez’s bats Friday after the New York Yankees slugger gave it to him during the game against the Red Sox. The back-story to the young fan’s bounty is simply heart-warming, according to Cut4.

Moss’ father Andy had promised David he’d take him to Fenway Park so he could meet his favorite player, David Ortiz, but he died from cancer last September before he could fulfill his vow.

Moss, a Mesa, Ariz., native, attended Friday’s game along with his mother and sister on his 8th birthday as guests of Red Sox. The family met Ortiz and sat in front-row seats near the batter’s box. That’s where the Moss-Rodriguez tale began when the two exchanged greetings in the second inning before A-Rod’s first plate appearance.

“‘I asked if I could have his bat,” Moss said, according to Cut4. “‘He said, ‘If I hit a home run you can have my bat!'”

Rodriguez hit a solo home run and kept his word to Moss.

The Red Sox won 4-2 on Ortiz’s epic two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The best promises are those that are kept.
