Blue Jays’ John Gibbons Spent All Week Being Ejected From Baseball Games

By the time it’s all said and done, the Toronto Blue Jays might not have any friends in Major League Baseball outside of Toronto.

The Blue Jays play with plenty of swagger, and they’re not afraid to fight for each other. They’re also not afraid to take a punch square to the jaw, as outfielder Jose Bautista proved last week in Texas.

We’ve seen the Blue Jays involved in a handful of on-field dust-ups with other teams, highlighted by that fracas with the Rangers, but Toronto manager John Gibbons also has a reputation as a manager who’s never found an umpire he couldn’t start an argument with.

Take this past week, for example. Gibbons was ejected from last Sunday’s debacle in Texas — for arguing balls and strikes, before the fight even broke out. A day later, he was ejected again for arguing balls and strikes. He then served his three-game suspension for coming back on the field after being ejected against Texas.

Gibbons returned to the dugout Friday night in Minnesota and actually behaved himself for a couple of games, but he was back to his argumentative ways Sunday afternoon.

That whole mess, as alluded to in the video, started with some sort of beef between the Twins and Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson. The sometimes hot-headed Donaldson was ejected Saturday after some jawing with the Twins’ bench, which apparently led to those inside pitches from Twins pitcher Phil Hughes.

Gibbons’ ejection Sunday was the 36th of his managerial career.
