The Boston Red Sox’s offense has been an unstoppable juggernaut this week, laying waste to the pitching staffs of the Oakland Athletics and Houston Astros in four consecutive blowout wins.
The Red Sox posted double-digit runs in each of the four contests — including the first string of three consecutive 13-run showings in franchise history — and entered Friday as the major league leader in runs, hits, doubles, total bases, batting average, slugging percentage and OPS.
It’s the kind of production shortstop Xander Bogaerts, who homered and drove in three runs in Thursday’s 11-1 win over the Astros, hasn’t even seen in a video game.
“This is kind of like a PlayStation, you know? I don’t think PlayStation scores this (many) runs,” Bogaerts told reporters Thursday night, via The Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham. “But it’s reality, and we’re doing it in our hometown and our home park, and our fans are definitely loving it.”
They certainly are. Boston, which is seeking its first playoff appearance since 2013, has won five straight and sits tied for first place in the American League East entering Friday night’s matchup with Houston at Fenway Park.
And Bogaerts is enjoying a highly productive season in his own right, ranking fifth in the majors with a .331 average and recording multiple hits in 14 of his 34 games this season.
