The Boston Red Sox will have some reinforcements Friday night when they open a homestand against the Cleveland Indians.

The Red Sox on Friday announced a few roster moves, most notably placing reliever Carson Smith on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 15 with right elbow soreness and placing utility man Brock Holt on the seven-day concussion disabled list retroactive to Thursday.

The club recalled catcher/left fielder Blake Swihart and reliever Noe Ramirez to fill the empty spots on the big league roster.

Smith started the season on the DL with a forearm strained suffered in spring training. He appeared in just three games after being activated, pitching 2 2/3 innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits. Smith last appeared in a game May 14.

As for Holt, this is his second concussion since 2014. He missed time late in 2014 after colliding with second baseman Dustin Pedroia.

Swihart’s return to the majors is an interesting one. He was sent down in early April and has seen time in the outfield. He struggled at the plate shortly after being sent down but has bounced back nicely, hitting safely in eight of his last 10 games at Pawtucket, posting a .313 batting average over that stretch.
