Chelsea’s Premier League home games against Tottenham Hotspur normally are straight-forward affairs, but the 2015-16 season is like no other campaign in England’s top flight.
Chelsea will welcome Tottenham to Stamford Bridge on Monday, looking to extend its home unbeaten streak against Spurs in league play to 26 games over 26-plus years. The Blues, who sit 10th in the Premier League standings, have extra motivation in that they want to end their London rivals’ hopes of winning the Premier League title for good.
Tottenham occupies second place in the standings with three games to play, but any result other than victory against Chelsea will crown Leicester City as England’s new champion.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino will have to make do without Professional Footballers’ Association (players union) Young Player of the Year Deli Alli, who must serve the first of his three-game, season-ending suspension for violent conduct Monday. Midfielder Eric Dier also is doubtful to play, having suffered a concussion last week against West Brom.
Chelsea captain John Terry could return to the lineup after missing 10 of the last 12 games with an achilles injury.
