Real Madrid stands on the brink of disaster and within touching distance of glory in the UEFA Champions League.

Real Madrid will host Manchester City on Wednesday at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semifinal series. The teams are tied 0-0 coming into the deciding game, and 90-plus minutes will determine whether history views their respective 2015-16 seasons as a success or failure.

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini is hoping to defeat Real Madrid — the team that fired him in 2010 after only one season at the helm — but must make do without playmaker David Silva and midfield lynchpin Yaya Toure. The recent injuries the veterans have suffered put additional responsibility on the shoulders of captain Vincent Kompany, striker Sergio Aguero and midfielder Kevin de Bruyne.

Cristiano Ronaldo missed the first leg because of a thigh injury, but the Portuguese superstar is fit enough to play Wednesday, according to head coach Zinedine Zidane. Ronaldo is Real Madrid’s Champions League talisman, and the semifinals are his domain, historically and currently.
