Don’t Rule Out A Conor McGregor-Floyd Mayweather Jr. Fight Just Yet

Conor McGregor’s camp is keeping an open mind.

Although McGregor is slated to face Nate Diaz at UFC 202 in August, the Irishman’s coach, John Kavanagh, still believes a bout with boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. could happen eventually.

“I think that contest will happen eventually, but it’s on hold for now. I’d be very surprised if it doesn’t (happen) at some stage,” Kavanagh told Jonathan Shrager of MMA Underground, per MMAFighting.com. “I think it’s a bigger fight. I think there’s a lot of intrigue about it. I could be 100 percent wrong. Right now, we’re focusing on Aug. 20. We have an important rematch — a mixed martial arts fight — but if in time that fight was to be announced, it would not surprise me and I think it would be an interesting one.”

A lot needs to happen in order for McGregor and Mayweather to meet in the boxing ring. For starters, Mayweather needs to reach out to UFC president Dana White, who said recently that he hasn’t yet spoken to the undefeated champ.

But the possibility of a fight sure is enticing. McGregor and Mayweather are the biggest draws in their respective combat sports, and both would stand to earn a lot of money, even if The Notorious would enter as a major underdog.

“Who knows? We could upset the world,” Kavanagh said of McGregor’s chances of beating Mayweather in a boxing match. “The great (Muhammad) Ali said, ‘the impossible is nothing.'”
