Kris Dunn Shoots Down Rumor About Not Wanting To Be Drafted By Celtics

The Boston Celtics already have a good-looking backcourt, but that doesn’t mean Kris Dunn is opposed to joining head coach Brad Stevens and Co.

Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical reported last month that Dunn’s camp was trying to push the Celtics and Phoenix Suns — owners of the No. 3 and No. 4 picks in next week’s NBA draft — away from selecting the Providence point guard because both teams already have young, established backcourts.

Dunn shot down the report Thursday in a phone interview with The Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach and actually sounds very open to the possibility of playing for the C’s.

“I mean it would be unbelievable to be selected by the Celtics,” Dunn told Himmelsbach. “My dream is just to get drafted, and that I have a chance to be a top-five player, it’s a blessing.”

Celtics point Isaiah Thomas is coming off an excellent season in which he earned his first career All-Star selection. He’s joined in Boston’s backcourt by Avery Bradley, who was named to the NBA’s All-Defensive First Team for the 2015-16 campaign, and Marcus Smart, a guard who was drafted sixth overall in 2014. But that apparent logjam isn’t an issue for Dunn, who grew up in New London, Conn., and claims to have no qualms about potentially being picked by the C’s next Thursday.

“I think that’s just a rumor going around,” Dunn said of Wojnarowski’s report. “That never came out of my mouth, that I didn’t want to play for any team.”
