MLB Rumors: Mets Debating Internally Whether To Sign Jose Reyes

Are Jose Reyes and the New York Mets moving toward a reunion?

The Colorado Rockies designated Reyes for assignment last week, meaning he’ll become a free agent if he passes through waivers unclaimed as expected. Major league sources told FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal the Mets are debating internally whether signing Reyes would be worth the public relations fallout.

Reyes, who was traded to Colorado from the Toronto Blue Jays last season, has yet to appear in a game this season. The Rockies clearly want no part of the 33-year-old shortstop following his 52-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy, but another team, like the Mets, could decide the four-time All-Star is worth the P.R. risk.

Reyes is coming off a 2015 campaign in which he hit .274 with seven home runs, 53 RBIs, 24 stolen bases and a .688 OPS. His production isn’t at the same level it was when he signed with the Florida Marlins in free agency in December 2011 after spending his first nine seasons with the Mets.

Whichever team signs Reyes will be on the hook for just the pro-rated portion of the major league minimum salary. The Rockies are eating nearly $40 million by cutting ties with him.
