Why Lionel Messi’s Teammate Expects Him To Un-Retire From Argentina Soccer Duty

Luis Suarez has some good news for international soccer fans: you might not have seen the last of Lionel Messi in an Argentina jersey.

Suarez, one of Messi’s club teammates with FC Barcelona, told Uruguay’s Radio Tenfield on Wednesday that he expects Messi to reverse his decision to retire from international soccer.

“Knowing Leo, I’m sure it was said in a moment of sadness and helplessness,” Suarez told, according to Sky Sports. “It would be a shame for football if he took this decision, but I’m sure he will reconsider and change his mind.

“It’s a difficult time. Everyone has the right to make decisions and they should be respected.”

Messi, 29, shocked the world Sunday in the aftermath of Argentina’s loss to Chile in the Copa America 2016 final — their fourth defeat in a final since 2007 and third in as many years. Observers cite a combination of heartbreak and frustration as driving forces behind Messi’s international retirement.

However, Argentina’s “God” and president have joined the chorus of calls for Messi to reconsider his retirement. Perhaps they know something about Messi that suggests he will backtrack.

Perhaps Suarez is the messenger of good news to come. Don’t bite him, er, shoot him if he’s wrong about Messi’s intentions.
