The Cleveland Indians won their 14th straight game Friday, and they had to work for more than six hours for it.

The Tribe beat the Blue Jays 2-1 in a 19-inning affair on Canada Day in Toronto, thanks in part to the Jays running out of pitchers. Indians designated hitter Carlos Santana was the one to put Cleveland ahead with a solo home run off infielder Darwin Barney in the 19th.

Blue Jays starter Marcus Stroman and the Indians’ Josh Tomlin each surrendered only one run, and the 15 combined relievers kept things scoreless through the 18th inning, as the 1:20 p.m. game continued into the night.

The Jays actually had two position players pitch — infielder Ryan Goins pitched in the 18th — but it was Barney who went home with the loss.

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons, catcher Russell Martin and designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion all were ejected for arguing the strike zone, which certainly didn’t help the club, either. The Indians’ 14-game streak is the longest in team history.
