UPDATE (4:25 p.m. ET): The Miami Marlins confirmed they had acquired Andrew Cashner and Colin Rea from the San Diego Padres and revealed full details of what is a seven-player trade.
ORIGINAL STORY: The Miami Marlins are bolstering their rotation.
The Marlins have reached an agreement to acquire starters Andrew Cashner and Colin Rea from the San Diego Padres, according to multiple reports. One of Miami’s top prospects, Josh Naylor, and at least one major league player reportedly are going to San Diego as part of the trade.
Cashner has underperformed the last couple of seasons after posting a 2.87 ERA in 50 appearances (45 starts) between 2013 and 2014. The 29-year-old right-hander is 4-7 with a 4.76 ERA in 16 starts this season, after which he’s set to become a free agent.
Rea represents a long-term asset for the Marlins, as he’s under team control through 2021. The 26-year-old righty is 5-5 with a 4.98 ERA in 19 games (18 starts) this season.
Naylor figures to be the centerpiece of Miami’s package. The 19-year-old first baseman was the 12th overall pick in 2015. He’s hitting .269 with nine home runs, 54 RBIs and a .747 OPS in 370 plate appearances at Single-A this season.
ESPN’s Buster Olney was the first to report Friday morning that the Marlins were acquiring Cashner. The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson then reported that Rea was part of the deal, and FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal broke the news that Naylor was going to the Padres. The Miami Herald’s Clark Spencer added that at least one major league player was headed to San Diego.
UPDATE (10:18 a.m. ET): Right-handed pitcher Luis Castillo is going to San Diego as part of the trade, sources told Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan.
UPDATE (10:47 a.m. ET): It appears this is a 3-for-2 trade, as the Marlins are sending pitcher Jarred Cosart to the Padres, too, according to ESPN’s Jayson Stark.
