Las Vegas’ New NHL Team Could End Up With Very Underwhelming Nickname

When it was announced in June that a new NHL franchise would be stationed in Las Vegas beginning with the 2017-18 season, the first question many fans asked was obvious: What’s the team going to be called?

There are so many different directions one could go with a Las Vegas-based team — the first major professional sports franchise to grace Sin City — and suggestions quickly littered the Internet.

Now we have a better idea as to which names are being considered. And let’s just say the options look rather underwhelming when compared to some of the more creative possibilities.

The Las Vegas franchise is owned by Black Knight Sports & Entertainment, a consortium led by Bill Foley. He shed light on the team’s name selection process earlier this week before Steve Carp of the Las Vegas Review-Journal confirmed the three “Hawk” names being considered, and he expressed a desire to have “Knights” or “Nights” — it was an audio interview, so we can’t tell — in the name in some fashion.

So, if we were to guess, that would make “Las Vegas Nighthawks” the leader of the pack. And while there are multiple ways the team could go with its logo — a bird or a fighter jet — it’s still a little disappointing given everything else Las Vegas could play off, based on its attractions and reputation.

The Chicago Blackhawks probably aren’t too thrilled about the idea, either.
