The unrest in Charlotte this week might cause the NFL and the Carolina Panthers to take drastic measures.
The city has been in a state of turmoil since Tuesday after the killing of Keith Lamont Scott, an African-American who was shot Tuesday by Charlotte police.
The killing led to protests, protests that turned ugly Tuesday night and into Wednesday. One man was killed during the protests Wednesday night, and the state declared a state of emergency with no end in sight.
The Panthers on Sunday host the Minnesota Vikings at 1 p.m. ET, and there’s obvious concern about whether Charlotte police will have enough of a presence to not only work the game but also worry about keeping the protests and riots in check.
It’s so much of a concern, in fact, that the NFL and the Panthers are considering moving the game, according to FOX 46 in Charlotte.
According to ESPN.com, Panthers officials planned to meet Thursday morning to discuss any and all plans. Many businesses in Charlotte, according to ESPN.com, told employees not to come downtown — where the protests are being held — for work unless it’s necessary.
It’s unclear what the timeline for a decision on potentially moving the game might look like, and it’s also unknown where the game would be moved if that decision was made.
