Listen up, folks. David Ortiz has something to say.

NESN’s Tom Caron recently sat down for an exclusive interview with Ortiz, part of which aired on NESN’s special presentation “David Ortiz: The Journey,” presented by Foxwoods Resort Casino. Before Big Papi exited stage left, TC asked the slugger to look into the camera and give a message to Red Sox Nation as he prepares to retire after this season.

Ortiz didn’t disappoint.

“If there’s one thing I would like to tell the fans here, it’s thank you,” Ortiz said after pondering for a moment. “As a player, as a human being, you never know how far you can go unless you get to be pushed, and you guys did that for me. You guys pushed me. I’m going to retire after this season, but there are days still in the time that I want to get things done because of you guys. So thank you.”

Ortiz’s career isn’t over just yet. The Red Sox are marching toward the postseason, which is where Ortiz typically shines brightest, so the final chapter of his story has yet to be written.

But there’s no way of getting around the fact that the clock is ticking. And regardless of whether the Red Sox succeed or fail if they make playoffs, Ortiz is going to ride off into the sunset having left behind a Boston legacy unlike any other.
